Nurses are a very important part of the healthcare system. Any system needs a strong base in the pyramid of hierarchy and nurses are responsible for that. Here are some facts about the importance of nurses in a healthcare system:

  • There are around 2.6 m nurses with license and registration in the US catering to more than 8.1 m patients everyday
  • As nursing is a necessary round the clock service, most of them work three shifts a week
  • A single nurse serves about 7 patients walking about 4 miles a day (more than a 5 k run)
  • About 2.5 % of people in America rely solely on nursing care
  • About 82.1 k pints of blood is transfused by nurses on an average day
  • About 11 thousand births take place in the US which directly decides the demand for nursing care
  • Almost three fourths of nurses are either with a bachelors or else an associate degree
  • The target set for the better delivery of healthcare by 2020 is to increase the nursing staff with at least a bachelors degree to 80% which is now around 50 %
  • Nursing has great growth as the employed registered nurses are projected to raise to 3.45 m by 2020
