Investment Banking Analyst Job Description

An Investment Banking Analyst is the entry-level banker on an M&A, capital markets or restructuring deal team, usually a recent college graduate. Analysts build the financial models, valuation work, pitch books and offering documents that associates, vice presidents and managing directors take to clients, and they run the data rooms and diligence logistics that keep a live transaction on schedule. The seat sits at the base of the deal team at bulge-bracket banks, elite boutiques and middle-market advisory firms. Our editorial estimate of base salary at large US banks runs from $100,000 to $125,000 with a $110,000 midpoint, before any discretionary year-end bonus.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Build three-statement operating models from company filings and management projections, then keep them current as deal assumptions and financing terms change
  • Run trading comparables, precedent transaction and discounted cash flow valuations, with sensitivity tables showing how value moves with key inputs
  • Construct leveraged buyout models that test the price a private equity sponsor could pay while still meeting its target return
  • Prepare merger models showing whether a proposed acquisition adds to or dilutes the buyer's earnings per share under different consideration mixes
  • Draft pitch books for prospective clients covering market context, positioning, valuation ranges and lists of likely buyers or acquisition targets
  • Write sections of teasers, confidential information memoranda and management presentations for sell-side processes under direction from associates and vice presidents
  • Set up and maintain virtual data rooms, track nondisclosure agreements, and log buyer diligence requests through each round of an auction
  • Pull market, financial and precedent deal data from FactSet, S&P Capital IQ, Bloomberg and SEC filings to support analysis and client materials
  • Check every client-facing page for numerical accuracy, consistent formatting and current share counts before it moves up the review chain
  • Coordinate diligence calls, management meetings and process deadlines among clients, buyers, lawyers and accountants during live transactions

Overview

An investment banking analyst is the junior member of a deal team at a bank or advisory firm, the person who turns a managing director's idea into numbers and slides. A typical team runs from managing director to director or vice president to associate to analyst, and the analyst sits at the base of that pyramid, producing the first draft of nearly everything the client eventually sees.

The work splits into two streams. The first is analysis. Analysts build three-statement operating models from a company's 10-K and 10-Q filings, then layer valuation on top: trading comparables, precedent transactions, discounted cash flow analysis with sensitivity tables, and, on sponsor deals, leveraged buyout models that test what a private equity buyer could pay and still clear its hurdle. On a strategic acquisition, the analyst runs the merger model that shows whether the deal lifts or dilutes the buyer's earnings per share, and reruns it every time the price, the financing mix or the synergy case moves.

The second stream is documents. A pitch book is the deck bankers bring to a prospective client to win a mandate: market overview, positioning, valuation ranges and a page of likely buyers or targets. Once a sell-side mandate is signed, the analyst helps draft the teaser and the confidential information memorandum, builds the management presentation, and loads the virtual data room on platforms such as Datasite or Intralinks. Every page passes through a review chain, and markups come back as annotated PDFs, often late in the evening.

Deal execution adds a coordination role. Analysts track buyer lists and nondisclosure agreements, log diligence requests, schedule calls between bidders and management, and keep process-letter deadlines straight during an auction. On debt and equity offerings the emphasis shifts toward comparable deal pricing, investor lists and the figures that feed the prospectus or offering memorandum, working alongside the capital markets and syndicate desks.

Groups come in two flavors. Industry coverage groups, such as technology, healthcare or financial institutions, own client relationships in a sector. Product groups, such as M&A, leveraged finance, equity capital markets and restructuring, own a transaction type. An analyst sits in one but works with the other on nearly every live deal, so a healthcare coverage analyst may spend weeks inside the leveraged finance team's debt model.

The toolkit is standard across the Street: Excel for models, PowerPoint with bank-built template add-ins for decks, FactSet, S&P Capital IQ and Bloomberg terminals for market data, and filings pulled from the SEC's EDGAR database. Accuracy is the currency of the job. A flipped sign in a model or a stale share count in a comps table can sink a pitch, so analysts spend real time each night checking their own work before it goes up to the associate, and the reputation for clean output is what gets an analyst staffed on the next good deal.

Qualifications

The analyst seat is an undergraduate hire. The usual path is a bachelor's in economics, finance, accounting or a quantitative major, though engineering, mathematics and liberal arts graduates who can show modeling skill also get through. The BLS profile for financial analysts lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education and notes that some employers prefer a master's degree; at banks, though, the MBA is the entry point for associates, not analysts.

The practical gateway is the summer analyst internship before senior year. Interns who perform well typically receive a full-time return offer, and those who do not can often recruit again as seniors at other banks or boutiques. Earlier experience builds the story: a sophomore internship at a boutique, a corporate finance or equity research role, a student-run investment fund, or a case or valuation competition.

Technical interviews test fundamentals rather than trivia. Expect to walk through how the three financial statements link, what happens to each when depreciation rises, how to bridge from equity value to enterprise value, why a DCF discounts unlevered free cash flow, and how a simple LBO generates returns. Building practice models from public filings before recruiting starts is the best preparation for those questions. Behavioral rounds probe why banking, why this group, and whether the candidate has a realistic picture of the workload.

Licensing arrives after the offer. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) is the main licensing organization for the securities industry, and because most of its licenses require sponsorship by an employer, banks do not expect new hires to hold them before starting. The investment banking representative registration, which covers advising on or facilitating securities offerings and M&A, requires passing both the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam and the Series 79 exam. Depending on the role, an analyst may also sit for the Series 63, the NASAA state law exam for broker-dealer representatives, administered by FINRA. The CFA charter from CFA Institute is not needed for the analyst seat, though some bankers pursue it later if they move toward investing.

Softer qualifications matter as much as the transcript: stamina through long runs of late nights, the habit of checking every number twice, clean slide formatting, and the judgment to know when to ask a question and when to work it out alone. Strong writing helps too, because a CIM is a sales document and senior bankers notice sloppy prose. Expect to relocate to the office named in the offer, whether New York or a regional hub such as San Francisco, Chicago, Houston or Charlotte, and to be reachable on nights and weekends when a deal is live.

Career outlook

The long-range numbers come from the broad BLS occupation rather than bank analyst programs specifically. Financial and Investment Analysts held 361,980 jobs in May 2025, and BLS projects employment of financial analysts to grow 7 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations. About 29,500 openings for financial analysts are projected each year over the decade, many of them to replace workers who move to other occupations or leave the labor force. Among the largest employers, the securities, commodity contracts, and other financial investments and related activities industry accounted for 24% of financial and investment analyst jobs in 2025.

The workload remains the price of admission. Business Insider reported in April 2026 that the grueling schedules junior bankers have long been known for have not changed much. Candidates should weigh that honestly before recruiting, and ask current analysts in the group how weekends, staffing and late-night turns actually work.

The exit market has become a flashpoint. In June 2025 JPMorgan sent a memo to incoming junior bankers saying it would fire those who accept future-dated jobs at buyout firms, and within days three private equity firms, starting with Apollo, said they would stall recruiting until 2026, Business Insider reported. Citi told new junior bankers in July 2025 that they would have to complete an attestation disclosing whether they had accepted any future employment offers. Across the five largest banks the policies run the gamut: some terminate an analyst immediately over a pre-dated offer, while others will not fire an analyst who discloses one.

AI is aimed directly at analyst production work. OpenAI enlisted more than 100 ex-investment bankers to help train its models to build financial models that could automate hours of entry-level tasks, in a project code-named Mercury, Fortune reported in October 2025, citing Bloomberg. In May 2026 Anthropic released finance agents including a "model builder," which can create financial models from filings and analyst notes, and a "pitch builder," which can draft pitchbooks ahead of client meetings, according to Business Insider. Experts told Fortune the shift will likely transform rather than replace entry-level roles.

For someone entering now, the practical read is that first drafts may get faster while the premium moves to checking machine output, understanding the client's business and knowing which slide actually answers the managing director's question. Clean technical work plus real sector knowledge keeps options open, whether the next step is an associate promotion, a buy-side seat, corporate development or business school. At the associate level the job shifts from building materials to managing analysts and checking their output, and the client contact an analyst watches from the back of the room becomes part of the role.

Sample cover letter

Dear Recruiting Team,

I am applying for a full-time analyst position in the Healthcare coverage group at Harbor Ridge Partners for next summer's class. I spent this past summer as an analyst intern at Calloway & Finch, a middle-market advisory firm, where I was staffed on a sell-side process for a regional physical therapy platform and two pitches to dental service organizations.

On the sell-side process I owned the operating model after the associate built its first version. I rebuilt the revenue build by clinic cohort so the team could show buyers how new locations ramped, then kept it current each time management sent revised projections before launch. I also set up the data room folder structure, tracked the NDA log, and turned around first-round diligence questions within a day. The work taught me how much of a deal depends on the unglamorous parts being right.

On the pitches I produced the trading comps and precedent transaction pages and drafted the market overview. My associate returned my first comps page covered in red ink: two companies had stale share counts and one multiple used the wrong fiscal year. I now keep a checklist taped to my monitor, and my later pages came back with formatting notes only.

Since August I have kept practicing, building a merger model for a public medical device deal from the proxy statement and walking through it with a finance professor who spent a decade in leveraged finance. I have also passed the SIE exam on my own time.

I want to join Harbor Ridge because your healthcare team runs both sponsor and strategic processes, and I would like to learn both sides of a sale before choosing my next step. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely, Jordan Alvarez

Frequently asked questions

What does an Investment Banking Analyst do?
What are the main duties of an Investment Banking Analyst?
Core duties include: build three-statement operating models from company filings and management projections, then keep them current as deal assumptions and financing terms change; run trading comparables, precedent transaction and discounted cash flow valuations, with sensitivity tables showing how value moves with key inputs; and construct leveraged buyout models that test the price a private equity sponsor could pay while still meeting its target return.
How many hours does an Investment Banking Analyst work?
Hours depend on the group and the deal calendar, and live transactions push them highest. In September 2024 JPMorgan said it would limit junior banker hours to 80 per week in most cases, with live deals exempt, on top of its existing "pencils down" period from 6 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday. Bank of America, where an 80-hour cap existed on paper but was reportedly routinely ignored, launched an internal platform to monitor individual workloads that same month.
Will AI replace Investment Banking Analysts?
Vendors are aiming squarely at the core of the job. CNBC reported on September 10, 2026, that in a live demonstration of OpenAI's ChatGPT for Financial Services, the platform analyzed a potential M&A target, pulled financial figures from industry-standard data sources and built a formatted PowerPoint deck from a bank's preformatted style guide. An OpenAI executive said at the launch that it is "very easy to make slides that look good, but it's much harder to make slides [that] actually make sense," adding that to build the deck ChatGPT had to choose the relevant peers.
How is an analyst at an investment bank paid?
Pay comes in two parts: a base salary and a discretionary year-end bonus. In a Prospect Rock Partners survey of more than 900 investment bankers reported by Business Insider, the data suggested that most analysts earned a bonus equal to about 50% of base pay in 2024. The pay band on this page covers base salary only, so total compensation sits above it.
What do analysts do after the program ends?
Next steps include promotion to associate at the same bank, a move to a private equity fund, hedge fund or growth equity investor, a corporate development role at an operating company, or business school. Private equity recruiting timelines have become contested at the largest banks, so read your employer's written policy before accepting any interview for a future-dated role.
Is an Investment Banking Analyst the same as a financial analyst?
Federal wage data has no separate category for the role, and the nearest occupation, Financial and Investment Analysts, also spans corporate finance, credit and fund analysts. The bank job is narrower: transaction work for outside clients on M&A and financings, inside a structured program with a set promotion timeline.
