Forward Deployed Engineer Job Description
A Forward Deployed Engineer is a software engineer who embeds with a customer to build and ship production systems on the employer's platform or AI models, inside the customer's own data, security rules and workflows. The role was popularized by Palantir and now appears at AI labs, cloud providers and consulting firms. FDEs own the work from discovery and scoping through code, rollout and handover, and send field lessons back to the product team. BLS does not track the title; for Software Developers, the closest occupation, May 2025 pay ran from $82,460 at the 10th percentile to $214,670 at the 90th, with a median of $135,980.

Overview
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside a customer's organization and is judged on one question: is the system they built running in production and doing useful work? The FDE sits with the client's engineers, analysts and operations staff, learns how the business actually runs, and then writes, configures and ships the code that connects the employer's platform or AI models to that business. The job sits between the vendor's product team and the customer's own IT department, and it belongs fully to neither.
Palantir is where the model took hold. Microsoft's corporate vice president for forward deployed engineering wrote in October 2026 that the term was popularized by Palantir circa 2009. Palantir's engineering blog explains that it calls these engineers "Deltas" internally, a name left over from early business development teams that were each named after a letter of the NATO alphabet.
An engagement runs in stages. The FDE starts with discovery: interviewing the people who will use the system, reading the data, and finding the workflow where a working tool would change results. Then comes access, often the slowest part: service accounts, network rules, data-sharing agreements and security reviews. CNBC described the job in October 2026 as working through existing technology systems, security requirements and organizational obstacles to turn promising AI experiments into applications companies can actually use. After that the FDE builds: pipelines into the customer's warehouse, integrations with the ERP or ticketing system, a retrieval layer over internal documents, an agent that takes actions through internal APIs, and the evaluation sets that show whether model output is good enough to trust. Finally the FDE hands the system over, documents it, trains the customer's team to run it, and moves to the next problem.
The technical surface for AI deployments is wide. In the same Microsoft post, the company's FDE lead listed the areas teams now work across, including multi-agent systems, the agentic harness, MCP and tool use, evals, observability, identity, security, state management, cost and latency, CI/CD and AI-assisted development. Day to day that means Python and TypeScript, SQL against whatever database the client runs, cloud consoles on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, container and deployment tooling, and the employer's own SDK or platform.
What sets the FDE apart from other customer-facing technical jobs is ownership of the build. The FDE does not stop at a demo, a proof of concept or a recommendation memo. They commit code to the customer's repositories, support what they shipped while the engagement lasts, and stay until the intended users are actually using it. They also carry information the other way: when a customer needs something the platform cannot do, the FDE either builds it as a one-off or writes it up for the core product team so the next customer gets it as a feature. Engagements happen in banks, hospitals, factories, retailers, defense agencies and city halls, and the setting changes the constraints. An FDE on a defense program may work behind classified network controls, while one at a retailer may spend a month inside the merchandising team's spreadsheets and forecasting tools.
Qualifications
No license or mandatory credential exists for this job. Employers hire a working software engineer first and a customer-facing problem solver second, and the order matters. Microsoft's FDE lead put it plainly in 2026: "Engineer" remains non-negotiable. BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers, the occupation group that covers this work, and a degree in computer science, software engineering, data science or a related field is the usual starting point. People from physics, applied math or quantitative economics also make the move when they can show production code.
As a rough guide, two to five years of shipping production software is a reasonable bar for a first FDE role, with lead and engagement-manager roles above that. What counts is evidence that you have owned a system end to end: designed it, deployed it, debugged it at 2 a.m., and explained the outage to someone who was not technical.
The working toolkit has four layers:
- Core engineering: Python and at least one typed language such as TypeScript or Java, SQL, REST and GraphQL APIs, Git, automated testing, Docker, and one major cloud.
- Data engineering: building ETL jobs, modeling messy enterprise data, and working in warehouses and lakehouses such as Snowflake, Databricks or BigQuery.
- AI deployment: retrieval-augmented generation, tool calling and agent frameworks, writing evaluation suites, tracing and observability, and trading off model quality against cost and latency.
- Customer craft: running discovery interviews, scoping a problem down to something shippable in weeks, writing clear design notes, presenting to executives, and saying no to requests that would sink the project.
Certifications are optional, but cloud credentials show you can work in the customer's environment without hand-holding. Useful ones include AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate from Amazon Web Services and Professional Cloud Architect from Google Cloud. Defense and intelligence engagements can require a federal security clearance, which an employer sponsors rather than one you earn on your own.
Routes in include software engineering at a startup, where everyone talks to customers; data engineering or analytics engineering inside a large company, which teaches how enterprise data actually looks; solutions architecture for engineers who kept writing code; and technical consulting for people with engineering degrees. Travel tolerance matters too. Some engagements mean weeks on site, while others run through the customer's Slack workspace, VPN and ticket queue.
Career outlook
BLS does not count forward deployed engineers separately. Its projections place this work under software developers, and a July 2026 BLS analysis of AI and IT occupations projected software developer employment to grow 15.8 percent from 2024 to 2034, an increase of 267,700 jobs and the largest gain in jobs among the occupations it examined.
Posting data for the title itself shows how fast hiring has moved. Labor market analytics firm Lightcast, in data reported by CNBC in October 2026, counted fewer than 200 U.S. FDE job postings in 2023, about 1,200 in 2025, and more than 7,300 in the first nine months of 2026. The figures represent advertised positions, not completed hires, so they measure employer intent rather than headcount. CNBC reported that consulting firms are among the biggest recruiters: Lightcast counted 872 unique FDE postings from Deloitte and 688 from Accenture in those nine months, followed by Google with 499 and KPMG with 447. The title is not limited to AI labs and software vendors; consulting firms use it for client delivery work too.
The cloud providers and model labs are building their own benches. CNBC reported that Amazon Web Services has committed $1 billion to its forward deployed engineering initiative, and that Anthropic plans to train 10,000 FDEs by the end of 2027. Those are company commitments and plans as reported in October 2026, not completed programs.
The shape of the job is changing as it spreads. Microsoft's FDE lead, writing in October 2026, said the definition has widened and that the unit of deployment is now a pod: the lone "hero FDE" gives way to small multidisciplinary teams of domain experts, software engineers, data scientists, process engineers and designers. His reading of the market is that the hardest problems in AI have shifted from the model to deployment. For job seekers, that means the work rewards people who can get a model working inside a regulated, permissioned, badly documented enterprise system, not only people who understand the model.
Paths out of the role are broad because the job touches every function. FDEs move into engagement or delivery leadership, product management (they already know what customers ask for), solutions architecture, platform engineering on the core product team, and founding roles at startups built around a problem they saw repeated across customers. Travel and constant context switching come with the job, so weigh both before taking an offer. Read the job description closely as well: if the role never commits code to production, it is a different job with a borrowed name.
Sample cover letter
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Forward Deployed Engineer role on your enterprise deployments team. For the past four years I have been a backend engineer at a logistics software company, and the part of the job I have enjoyed most is the part that was never in my title: sitting with customers until the software actually worked for them.
Last year one of our largest freight customers was close to canceling because our routing service could not read their warehouse system's data. I spent three weeks in their operations center in Memphis. I mapped their data model with the shift supervisors, wrote the integration in Python against their Oracle database, and got a security exception approved by walking their IT lead through every port and credential we needed. The integration went live before the renewal date, and I wrote the connector up for our product team, who turned it into a supported feature for other customers.
Since then I have focused on applying language models to the same kind of messy operational data. I built a retrieval system over carrier contracts that lets our account managers answer rate questions in seconds, and I wrote the evaluation set that convinced our legal team the answers were accurate enough to use. I learned that evals are what earn trust with skeptical users, and that the hard work is usually access, data cleanup and change management rather than the model call itself.
Your team's focus on putting production AI systems into regulated industries is exactly the work I want to do full time. I am comfortable with travel, with ambiguity, and with being the person in the room who has to say what can ship in two weeks and what cannot.
I would welcome the chance to talk about your current engagements.
Sincerely, Jordan Alvarez

The role was popularized by Palantir and now appears at AI labs, cloud providers and consulting firms. FDEs own the work from discovery and scoping through code, rollout and handover, and send field lessons back to the product team. BLS does not track the title; for Software Developers, the closest occupation, May 2025 pay ran from $82,460 at the 10th percentile to $214,670 at the 90th, with a median of $135,980.
- What are the main duties of a Forward Deployed Engineer?
- Core duties include: embed with a customer's engineering, data and operations teams to learn their workflows, systems and constraints before proposing any technical solution; scope ambiguous business problems into deliverable projects with clear success metrics, timelines and ownership agreed with customer stakeholders and internal leads; and write production code in Python, TypeScript or Java that connects the employer's platform or AI models to the customer's existing systems.
- How is a Forward Deployed Engineer different from a product software engineer?
- Palantir, which popularized the role, draws the line this way: a product engineer creates a single capability that can be used for many customers, while a forward deployed engineer enables many capabilities for a single customer. The FDE works inside one client's systems and constraints, and feeds the patterns that repeat back to the product team.
- How much does a Forward Deployed Engineer earn?
- BLS does not track the title. For Software Developers, the closest occupation, May 2025 national pay ran from $82,460 at the 10th percentile to $214,670 at the 90th, with a median of $135,980.
- Will AI agents replace forward deployed engineers?
- Some platform work is already being automated: Palantir offers an agent it calls AI FDE, which translates natural language requests into Foundry operations such as data transformations, code repository management and ontology work. That covers tasks inside one platform. Discovery, access approvals, customer trust and the judgment about what to build still sit with the people on the engagement.
- Do forward deployed engineers have to travel?
- It depends on the employer and the customer. Some engagements mean weeks on site in the customer's office, plant or secure facility, while others run remotely through the customer's chat workspace, VPN and code repositories.
- What does an FDE work on in the first weeks of an engagement?
- Early weeks go to discovery and access: interviewing users, reading the data, getting accounts and security approvals, and agreeing on one measurable outcome. Building starts once the team can reach real data, and the first goal is a narrow working system in front of real users.
