Customer Service
Customer Support Forward Deployed Engineer Job Description
A Customer Support Forward Deployed Engineer is a software engineer employed by an AI customer service vendor who embeds with a client's support organization to scope, build, test and launch AI agents inside that client's own systems, then moves on to the next engagement. The job sits at the junction of the vendor's product team and the client's help desk, phone platform, CRM and order systems. Vendors use their own names for it, such as agent engineer at Sierra and Decagon. BLS does not track the title. The nearest BLS figures cover software developers in the software publishing industry: in May 2025 the middle of that pay range was $164,550, the bottom tenth earned less than $82,180 and the top tenth more than $218,330.

- Top employer types
- AI customer service platform vendors, help desk and CRM software companies, and firms that implement their products.
- Growth outlook
- BLS does not project this title; vendors staff the work under their own names, such as agent engineer.
- AI impact (through 2030)
- The job exists to deploy AI support agents, and platforms such as Intercom now let AI draft an agent procedure as a starting point.
Duties and responsibilities
- Scope a client's highest-volume support journeys, such as returns, cancellations and account changes, against its written procedures and ticket history.
- Map the APIs and systems of record an agent must call, from order management to billing and CRM, and arrange access with client IT.
- Build agent logic on the vendor's platform, writing procedures in code or plain language and forcing exact wording where a policy requires it.
- Connect the agent to the client's help desk, telephony and chat channels so transcripts, tags and escalations land in the queues staff already use.
- Design handoff rules that pass full conversation context to a live representative when the agent reaches a policy limit or an unsupported request.
- Run simulated customer conversations before launch and after every change to catch regressions in accuracy, tone and adherence to the client's policies.
- Trace failed conversations to the faulty prompt, tool call or knowledge article, then ship and verify a fix within the engagement timeline.
- Tune voice agents for latency, interruptions and speech recognition errors, measuring response times on real call recordings and test calls.
- Report resolution, escalation and satisfaction results to client support leaders and executives, linking each agent change to the metric it moved.
- Turn requirements that repeat across clients into feature requests, reusable components or platform fixes for the vendor's product and engineering teams.
Overview
A Customer Support Forward Deployed Engineer is the vendor's engineer in the room when a company switches on an AI agent for its customers. The employer is the AI support platform, not the company whose customers are calling. The engineer joins the client's support organization for an engagement measured in weeks or months, gets an agent answering real customers inside the client's systems, hands day-to-day operation to the client or to the vendor's account team, and moves to the next account.
Vendors describe the role in their own terms. Sierra says its agent engineers "work with our customers to design, build, and ship agents" on its platform, Agent OS. They define agent behavior in Sierra's Agent SDK, composing skills expressed in a declarative programming language. Decagon has Agent Engineers who partner with clients on deployments; one wrote that when the team partnered with Block, the parent company of Square and Cash App, the work called for faster, more natural voice interactions. The title on a business card varies, but the job is the same: turn a client's support policy into a production agent.
The engagement, start to finish
Scoping comes first. The engineer reads the client's standard operating procedures, pulls samples of real tickets and calls, and picks the journeys worth automating: order status, returns, subscription changes, troubleshooting. Sierra's examples of shipped agents include one that troubleshoots Sonos speaker connections and one that refreshes a SiriusXM radio by sending a signal from a satellite to the car.
Then comes integration. An agent that can only answer questions cannot cancel an account or reissue a refund. Sierra frames the problem plainly: without access to the underlying APIs and systems of record, a service experience ends at question and answer. The engineer works with client IT and security to get credentials for order management, billing, identity and CRM systems, and chains those calls in the right order. Sierra notes that most workflows require agents to orchestrate multiple API calls in a particular order to reach an outcome.
Some steps cannot be left to a language model. Refund thresholds, legal disclosures and identity checks need fixed wording and fixed logic, and Sierra's SDK can selectively bypass the LLM where consistency matters. The engineer decides, with the client, which steps are flexible and which are scripted.
Who they work with
On the client side: the head of support or customer experience, contact center operations managers, quality assurance leads, IT, security and compliance. On the vendor side: product managers, platform engineers and the account team that will own the relationship after launch. Decagon says its Agent Engineers work closely with orchestration, research, infrastructure, product and Agent Product Managers.
What they deliver
A live agent on chat, email or voice; a test suite that runs on every change; escalation rules that route hard cases to people with context attached; dashboards the client's support leaders read; and a written handover so the client's team or the vendor's support staff can keep the agent current as policies change.
Qualifications
As a rough guide, a Customer Support Forward Deployed Engineer has studied software engineering, computer science or something related at the bachelor's level, or has equivalent experience, plus about 3 to 6 years of professional software work. Backgrounds that transfer well include solutions or sales engineering, integration engineering, technical consulting, and support engineering at a SaaS company, because each combines code with a customer who is waiting on the result.
Engineering skills
The core is ordinary backend and integration work: REST and GraphQL APIs, OAuth and webhooks, authentication against a client's identity provider, and debugging someone else's systems with incomplete documentation. Sierra lists the modern AI stack its agent engineers are expected to master, including large language models, vector databases, prompt engineering, agent architecture and AI orchestration engines. Sierra also stresses that AI agents are nondeterministic, which changes how an engineer tests: the same input can produce different answers, so a passing test once is not proof.
Language choices follow the vendor. Sierra builds in its own SDK; other platforms expose plain-language procedure editors with code hooks for tool calls. Comfort with TypeScript or Python is a practical base.
Support operations knowledge
Engineers in this job need to read a contact center the way its managers do. That means understanding queues, routing, escalation tiers, quality scorecards, and the help desk and phone platforms clients already run, such as Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud, Genesys or Amazon Connect. Someone who has never seen how a refund exception gets approved will build an agent that approves the wrong ones.
Client skills
The role is customer-facing every day. Decagon describes its Agent Product Managers testing workflows for functionality, tone, correctness and other core KPIs and working with a client's executive team to define its AI roadmap; an engineer in this job should expect similar work. Sierra says its Agent Strategists, who lead deployments end-to-end, are embedded within the client's organization and responsible for driving outcomes, so business acumen is key. Expect to present results to a vice president of support one day and debug a webhook with a client developer the next.
Credentials
No license or certification is required. Engineers who want a credential that maps to the work can consider Amazon Web Services' AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate, and engineers deploying on Salesforce can pursue the Salesforce Certified Agentforce Specialist exam.
Building a portfolio
A working agent that calls a real API, a written evaluation plan, and a short write-up of how you handled a failure case show more than a list of model names. Show that you can explain a technical tradeoff to a support manager in plain language.
Career outlook
BLS does not track forward deployed engineers or AI agent deployment work as a separate occupation, so no official projection exists for the title. The nearest group BLS does measure is software developers at software publishers: BLS counted 173,080 of them in May 2025, a figure that covers every kind of software work in that industry, not only customer-embedded roles.
Pricing tied to outcomes
Some vendors now price their agents by outcome. At its Relate conference on May 19, 2026, Zendesk announced outcome-based pricing alongside omnichannel AI agents and copilots. Intercom lists its Fin AI Agent at $0.99 per outcome and counts an outcome when a customer confirms the issue is resolved, does not ask for more help after Fin responds, or Fin completes a workflow (a Procedure), including handoffs. When the price depends on outcomes, the contract's definitions shape what a deployment is judged on, and the engineer needs to know them as well as the account team does.
Build tools in plain language
Platforms also sell build tools aimed at non-engineers. Zendesk introduced Agent Builder, a no-code interface for companies to build, test, deploy and optimize custom AI agents. Intercom's Fin Procedures are written in natural language, combined with deterministic controls, and Intercom lets AI draft a procedure as a starting point. Decagon built its Simulations product around Agent Operating Procedures (AOPs), with a Trace View that shows the agent's decision path so teams can debug before QA gets involved. A client still has to decide where a refund policy needs a hard rule, and someone still has to connect the agent to the client's billing and order systems; that is the deployment engineer's ground.
After launch day
Some deployments put an agent on a client's main support channel, including voice. An agent in that position needs monitoring, regression testing and change control long after launch day.
Where the career leads
Decagon describes several paths within its Agent Engineering group: some people lean into deep technical architecture, others into product engineering or customer strategy, and growth comes from leading bigger customer engagements, owning larger product scope or helping scale the team. Outside the vendor, the client-facing record and integration depth carry over to solutions architecture, product management for AI platforms, and leadership of a company's own AI support engineering group.
How to find these jobs
Because the title is new and each vendor names it differently, searches should cover agent engineer, deployment engineer, forward deployed engineer, solutions engineer and implementation engineer, filtered by AI customer service or contact center platforms. Read the description, not the title: the signal is a role that ships a client's agent to production rather than demonstrating one in a sales cycle.
Sample cover letter
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Customer Support Forward Deployed Engineer role on your deployment team. For the past five years I have worked as an integration engineer at a mid-sized subscription software company, where I spent more time inside our customers' systems than inside our own codebase. I want to bring that habit to a team that puts AI agents into production for support organizations.
My favorite project last year started with a frustrated support director. Her team handled thousands of billing questions a week, and our self-service flow could answer them but could not change anything. I mapped the four billing API calls a plan downgrade required, worked with her IT group to get scoped credentials, and built an automated flow that completed the change, confirmed it in writing, and handed off to a person whenever a refund crossed the approval threshold her finance team set. I wrote the test conversations myself from her team's real tickets, including the angry ones, and reran them every time we touched the flow.
What I learned is that the hard part is rarely the model. It is the policy nobody wrote down, the system that times out under load, and the supervisor who needs to trust the handoff before she will let the agent take calls. I am comfortable in all three conversations: with developers about retry logic, with operations managers about queues and quality scorecards, and with executives about what the agent is and is not allowed to do.
I work mostly in TypeScript and Python, I have built against Zendesk and Salesforce Service Cloud, and I have been studying evaluation methods for nondeterministic systems on my own time. I would welcome the chance to talk about the clients you are onboarding next and how I could help get their agents live.
Sincerely, Dana Whitfield
Frequently asked questions
- What does a Customer Support Forward Deployed Engineer do?
- A Customer Support Forward Deployed Engineer is a software engineer employed by an AI customer service vendor who embeds with a client's support organization to scope, build, test and launch AI agents inside that client's own systems, then moves on to the next engagement.
- What are the main duties of a Customer Support Forward Deployed Engineer?
- Core duties include: scope a client's highest-volume support journeys, such as returns, cancellations and account changes, against its written procedures and ticket history; map the APIs and systems of record an agent must call, from order management to billing and CRM, and arrange access with client IT; and build agent logic on the vendor's platform, writing procedures in code or plain language and forcing exact wording where a policy requires it.
- How is a Customer Support Forward Deployed Engineer different from an engineer on a company's own support team?
- The forward deployed engineer works for the vendor, joins a client's support organization for a defined engagement, and ships an agent inside that client's systems before rotating to another account. An engineer on a company's own team builds and maintains that company's support tooling over the long run and answers to its support leadership, not to a vendor's deployment schedule.
- How much does a Customer Support Forward Deployed Engineer earn?
- BLS does not report this title separately. The closest BLS data point is software developers in the software publishing industry, which includes AI support platform vendors: their May 2025 median wage was $164,550, with the 10th and 90th percentiles at $82,180 and $218,330.
- Will AI tools automate the forward deployed engineer's own work?
- Vendors are already pointing AI at the build step: Sierra describes Ghostwriter as its agent for building agents, which it says makes it possible for one person to take an idea from concept to production. A tool like that still needs someone to connect the agent to a client's order, billing and identity systems and to settle with the client what the agent is allowed to do, and that is the core of this job.
- How do these engineers test an AI support agent before customers see it?
- Through simulation suites of AI-generated customer conversations. Sierra says it auto-generates test cases from a client's standard operating procedures, knowledge bases, historical coaching transcripts and conversation flows, then has another agent grade the results as an independent judge. Intercom calls running Simulations before setting a Procedure live the recommended way to ensure reliable behavior at scale.
- What extra rules apply when the client is a health plan or medical provider?
- HIPAA's business associate rules can apply. HHS says the HIPAA Security Rule's business associate agreement requirements apply when a business associate creates, receives, maintains or transmits electronic protected health information on behalf of a covered entity, so an agent handling patient account or claims conversations may bring the vendor under such an agreement. The engineer then builds within the access, logging and data-handling limits that agreement sets.
